MWh solar production
tonnes fresh produce diverted from landfill
tonnes CO2 emissions saved from energy production.
Thousands of kilograms of fresh fruit and vegetables are traded through the Melbourne Market each working day. The MMA helps facilitate several food recovery and diversion programs for market users, including:
Food recovery collection points for donations to FareShare/SecondBite (next to Store 6) and FoodBank (next to Store 148). Organic produce that is fit for human consumption can be donated Monday to Friday from 6.30 am until 9.00 am and is tax deductible at the Market price of the produce. For questions relating to donations, please contact Fareshare/ SecondBite or FoodBank.
Partnerships with organisations like Zoos Victoria and local farms to collect produce and organics for animal feed
Innovative projects such as Yarra Valley Water’s waste-to-energy program.
Initiatives to maximise efficiency of the Market’s energy and water use include:
A solar canopy boasting more than five thousand 2.4 megawatt solar panels that help subsidise tenant electricity bills
Rainwater capture and recycling where appropriate, such as in the Market’s central cooling plant
During the 21/22 financial year, infrastructure was put in place to redirect harvested rainwater to the central cooling plant water towers, saving approximately 10 million litres of potable water.
As well as utilising the market’s vast roof space for solar energy production, the rooftops harvest valuable rainwater used for toilet flushing, flower buckets and other areas not requiring potable water.
Quay clean manages recycling, waste collection and cleaning within the Market on behalf of the Melbourne Market Authority (MMA). Sorted recyclables including cardboard, paper, polystyrene and plastic are recycled free of charge.
The first 100 kilograms of uncontaminated/clean organic waste can be recycled free of charge with every additional kilogram charged at a rate of $0.20 (ex GST) per kilogram.
Unsorted waste delivered to the Recycling Transfer Centre will be charged at the general waste/landfill disposal rate.
Plain pallet disposal is free at the Recycling Transfer Centre and dedicated plain pallet drop off zones.
Any waste dumped on Market land will be tracked to a market user. Dumped waste will be charged at general waste rates and will incur demerit points under the Market Operating Rules. Associated cleaning charges will also be charged at $200 per incident of dumping.
Payments must be paid at the Recycling Transfer Centre (debit card and credit card including paywave accepted). All credit card transactions attract a 2.5% transaction fee.
